MARIANNE GOODELL ENAMELS

FAQ

Here are some of my most frequently asked questions. If you don’t see your question here, please feel free to reach out so I can help.

What is enamel? Enamel is very finely ground glass fused to metal with either a torch or a kiln. Layers and layers are built upon one another to give rich deep colors

Will it fade? NO! Because it is ground glass and the color is part of the glass, it never fades. It’s why you can see ancient enamels that look the same as they did when they were created.

Will it break? Because it is glass, it is possible that it will chip or crack if dropped onto a hard surface. Treat them as you would any glass or ceramic treasure.

How Do I Clean them? To remove smudges or oils, a soft jewelry polishing cloth is enough. For more detail on cleaning enamel, refer to my blog post here.

Can I Touch It? YES! It’s impossible not to. The smoothness of the surface invites touching. Several of my pieces are made specifically with fidgeting fingers in mind. Touching enamel is a very grounding and soothing thing to do.

How Long Does it take to make one?The answer to that question depends upon what type of enamel I’m creating. My simplest designs (mainly earrings) that are not encased in silver (a setting) take between 2-5 hours to make. My more complicated work (cloisonne or painted enamels) set in a unique setting can take at least 20 hours (or more) hours to make.

How hot is the kiln?I’m generally fusing the enamel at approximately 1400°. Each fusing only takes approximately 2 minutes.

Can I learn how? YES! I offer two classes online as well as several in person classes. You can find them here.
