WHAT IS ENAMEL?

WHAT IS ENAMEL?

“Confidence is not ‘they will like me’, confidence is ‘I’ll be fine if they don’t’”

~Christina Grimmie

I didn’t know!

I speak of enamels as if people know what they are. I’ll admit, the first time I saw one, I had no clue what it was. I just know that I fell in love with it. It’s what started my journey into jewelry making and enameling.

What is it?

Vitreous enamel, or porcelain enamel, or hot enamel is a type of glass fused to metal. It is applied to the surface of the metal and fired at approximately 1400 degrees F. This process is repeated several times to achieve the artist’s vision. Once it cools and hardens, the enamel creates a durable and corrosion-resistant barrier that protects the metal beneath it.

Why do you want it?

In the world of jewelry, vitreous enamel is a popular choice for adding color and design to metal pieces. It allows for a wide range of creativity and can add a unique, eye-catching element to any piece. It’s also a durable option, as the enamel is colorfast meaning it will not fade over time. So next time you’re admiring a beautiful piece of enameled jewelry, you’ll know the process and thought that went into creating it.

Follow These Simple Steps When Commissioning a Jeweler

  • Get clear on what it is you want. Collect images of pieces that appeal to you.
  • Find a jeweler who works in the style you like. Don’t just hire a jeweler because the said they make jewelry. Hire them because they create pieces that speak to your aesthetic.
  • Be explicit in your vision.

Setting Appropriate Expectations

  • Confirm that the materials that will be used are what you want. Don’t expect the jeweler to work with materials they’ve never used before.
  • Make sure both parties are clear on the size of the finished piece. If you’re commissioning a ring, make sure you know your size.
  • Get clear on the price for the finished piece.

Establish Clear Communication

  • Get clear on the timeline. How long will it take once the contract is signed. Make sure both parties agree to the timeline.
  • The jeweler will probably ask for a non-refundable 1/2 down to start and then 1/2 down upon completion.
  • Some jewelers will share photos while the piece is being made, some won’t. Know what your jeweler will do.
create a sacred space to welcome creativity.

Can Revisions Be Made

  • In some cases, minor adjustments can be made along the way. First, know if your jeweler will make those revisions before they start the project and secondly, determine how many revisions can be made. Some people don’t allow any while some may allow one or two.

Have A Successful Experience

Consequently, Be sure to follow these steps so the process can be enjoyable for both you and the jeweler. And, then ask for a commissioned piece. There is nothing like having a piece of jewelry make just for you! I know! I’ve had many pieces made for me and I’ve made many for other people!

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR ENAMEL JEWELRY

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR ENAMEL JEWELRY

Treat your jewelry with care and it will last a lifetime” ~ Unknown

There is evidence of enamel work dating back to the 3rd millennium BCE in regions like Mesopotamia and Egypt. Clearly, it can last a long time. With a little TLC, your enamel jewelry can be passed down for generations. Just by following these simple instructions to care for your enamel jewelry will keep it shining bright.

How to care for your enamel jewelry

  • Keep it clean. To avoid potential damage from cleaners or abrasives use to lukewarm water, a soft cloth, and something gentle such as hand soap or Dawn dishwashing soap (Dawn is good for removing grease).
  • In the event the setting has tarnished, the most gentle way (especially if there are beads) is to use Dawn dish soap and a soft toothbrush.
  • If there is still built up dirt, make a mixture with soap and some baking soda.
  • And, if it’s still tarnished use vinegar and baking soda (only as a last resort)
  • Avoid lotions and perfumes because they will also tarnish the jewelry quicker.
  • Keep your jewelry in safe locations. Because enamel is glass, it can crack if dropped onto a hard surface. An example would be to storing it in a soft lined jewelry box or in a fabric pouch will help keep it safe from accidental drops with moisture reducing packets. No matter what, silver will oxidize. It’s a matter of minimizing it.

6 LESSONS MOTHER NATURE TAUGHT ME

6 LESSONS MOTHER NATURE TAUGHT ME

Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.”

    ~Albert Einstein

Recently, I’ve been hiking on my own (in a safe location) and listening to the messages nature so graciously gives. As she spoke to me, I realized that her messages translate so beautifully into my daily life and my enameling. Here are some of the things she told me:

Don’t Consider a Bad Situation a Lifelong Sentence

Two years ago we had several avalanches due to extreme snowfall. Swaths of trees were decimated. Two years later, it’s only from  the residual debris that we can even tell that there ever was an avalanche. My professional life seems to be a series of mini avalanches. I never experienced a devastating clearing out, however, I did experience dramatic changes. I moved from tech, to crafting, to enameling, to silver smithing, to painting, and now to a combination of all. Interestingly, I allowed each clearing to make space for an unknown new.

    Unknown Path

If you’ve followed me for awhile, you probably know I absolutely adore portals. I love that they represent the unknown. I love going through them. I feel like they bring enchantment and wonder to my life’s adventure. When I hike, I frequently encounter natural portals. It brings forth that wonder and enchantment. I’ve been fortunate to experience my artistic journey as a series of portals. There’s a sense of wonder and enthusiasm about diving into the unknown. My journey has been filled with twists and turns, but each time I willingly go through a portal, the joy of the new experience is almost palpable.

Find the Path of Least Resistance

Both the avalanches and the resulting spring melt illustrate how nature continually follows the path of least resistance. I love spring runoff because it illuminates that point. Water that typically flows down one path may choose an altogether different path simply because it is easier. It doesn’t care that it’s not where it’s “supposed” to go. It goes where it makes the most sense. I’ve had a more difficult time assimilating this truth into my journey. I often resisted the simpler path only to result in frustration. When I finally quit trying to force my path and allowed it to naturally flow, my expression became much more clear.

Stand in Your Own True Self – Don’t Compare

I’ve heard this truth time and time again – the trees don’t compare – they stand in their own beauty – they don’t try to be anything they’re not. It’s easy to see that all of these statements are true in nature. Walking on a trail, looking at the various trees or looking on the ground at the fallen leaves, I see the beauty in the differences. Yet, once again, translating this truth to my own personal life or my creative journey took a few (thousand) tries. Now I’m finally owning who I am as an artist and appreciating my own unique voice. I admire and am inspired by so many other artists. I appreciate their voice and approaches often learning from them. However, they are them and I am me and there is room for us all.

    Seasons

For years, I hated winter because it was dark and cold and I didn’t have as much energy. I hated fall because it led to winter. That meant that I only liked two seasons. Nature shows me that every season has a purpose. We can’t be expanding all of the time, we cannot be operating in full force all of the time. We need to harvest the fruits of our labor. We need to rest to rejuvenate. Releasing things that are no longer needed makes room for new. Resting in stillness allows for revitalization. I now recognize that each season has an important purpose for the whole. Even with my enameling, I recognize a cycle and embrace it now.

    Support One Another

Walking along, I notice that fallen trees slowly are decomposing. Looking at them as only debris is missing the entire point. Looking closer, I see that they are nourishment for new growth. As I pause to look at plants growing of a fallen tree, I feel a sense of gratitude for the generosity of the fallen tree. It’s such a beautiful reminder to share. It’s how I approach my enameling. People before me have generously shared their knowledge with me. I take that generosity and pay it forward.

Buy Jewelry Because You Love It bust the myth of fine jewelry

    Dispel The Fine Jewelry Myth

When we think of fine jewelry, our minds often conjure images of mass-produced, generic designs that lack personality and soul. However, this common misconception couldn’t be further from the truth. The real gem lies in hand-crafted one-of-a-kind jewelry, each piece unique and created with a depth of emotion and passion that makes them truly extraordinary.

In this blog, I want to dispel the myth surrounding fine jewelry and explore the compelling reasons why investing in hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind pieces is the way to go.

    The Myth of Fine Jewelry

Traditional fine jewelry, often produced on a large scale, has unfortunately given the term a lackluster reputation. This mass-produced jewelry might feature precious metals and gemstones, but they often lack the personal touch and emotional resonance that makes a piece truly special. These items are often made with efficiency in mind, leading to a sacrifice of the artist’s creative vision and artistic expression.

As a result, many people find themselves owning pieces that look and feel like countless others, leading to a sense of detachment from their jewelry.

    The Real Purpose of Jewelry

In reality, the only purpose your jewelry serves is to make you feel good. It might make you feel beautiful when you wear it. It might remind you of a cherished moment or someone you love. It might provide a psychological or healing reminder. Or, finally, it might just be a way in which you express yourself. As long as it makes you happy, it serves its purpose.

Nature reminds us that there is perfection in the imperfection. Perfect diamonds or pearls or precious gemstones are beautiful, yet don’t need to be the only option for jewelry. It is so fulfilling when you choose what speaks to your heart and makes you shine.

The Beauty of Hand-Crafted One-of-a-Kind Jewelry

Hand-crafted one-of-a-kind jewelry, on the other hand, is a revelation of artistry and creativity. Each piece is carefully conceived and brought to life because I pour my heart and soul into the process. The beauty of this kind of jewelry lies not just in its aesthetic appeal, but in the emotional journey it represents. All of the little extra touches including messages on the back are the way I form a connection with the person wearing the piece.

    FIND YOUR PERSONAL STYLE

    FIND YOUR PERSONAL STYLE

Style as a matter of attitude, attitude, attitude, but you have to possess individuality to have an attitude. You can’t be like everybody else and copy what everybody else is doing.

    ~Iris Apfel

5 ways to find your personal style

Think of a person who you immediately can say – “that person knows her style.” They know what they like and they put it together so well. How do they do it? Do you feel like you don’t have a personal style? I bet you do but didn’t realize it. Here are some tips on finding your personal style.

    1. Look to your own history: What did you like to wear as a child or teenager? What styles have you always been drawn to? Consider your own past fashion choices and see if there are any patterns or themes that can help define your personal style. What colors are you drawn to?
    2. Think about your lifestyle: Your personal style should be practical and suit your everyday needs. Consider your profession, hobbies, and other activities you participate in when determining what types of clothing and accessories will work best for you.
    3. Experiment with different styles: Don’t be afraid to try out different looks and see what feels comfortable and authentic to you. You may find that you enjoy a more classic, timeless look, or that you prefer something more edgy and contemporary.
    4. Take inspiration from others: It’s okay to look to others for inspiration, but be sure to put your own spin on things and make the style your own. Consider your own body type, skin tone, and other personal characteristics when adapting a look from someone else.
    5. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes: It’s natural to make fashion mistakes as you experiment with different styles. Don’t let this discourage you – instead, use it as an opportunity to learn and grow.

Remember that personal style is an ongoing process and it’s okay to make changes and try new things as you go. Your jewelry choices can reflect your personal preferences.

QUALITY MATTERS MY MOM SAID SO

QUALITY MATTERS MY MOM SAID SO

Can You Really Tell if it is a Quality Piece?

Details matter. You know how you can just tell when something is well made? Or, you can tell when there has been alot of attention put into all of the details?

If a thing’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well.

    ~Chinese Proverb

A disorganized space filled with clutter adding to the chaos and stress of your life

Let Me Tell You A Story

My mother used to sew all of our clothes when I was young. It was primarily to save money, but it also was a passion of hers. I appreciated her efforts, but it wasn’t until I was an adult that I realized the gift she gave to us.

Not only did she make beautiful things, but she also took the time to make them as perfect as she possibly could. Over and over I would hear her say that the inside matters as much as the outside. We literally could have worn our clothing inside out because of her attention to detail..

Her Wisdom Echoes as I Create

That philosophy has resonated with me since that time. I think it’s a perfect metaphor for how to be as a person, how to live a life, and how to do whatever it is we love to do. For me, I really love to bring it into the pieces that I create.

Details matter. Details show a level of care for the process of creation. Details honor the craft.

A woman relaxing in her calm space after she has decluttered

    Like Attracts Like

As I continue to navigate my creative journey, I have come across people who also have my mother’s philosophy. Maybe it’s because her words are ingrained in my cells that I vacillate towards these people. Now, their words have also joined my mother’s to echo in my mind as I give attention to whatever is in front of me.

My dear enameling teacher said, “If you’re not going to do it well, why bother.” My amazing silversmithing teacher says, “Take the time to do it right because it matters.” I carry these words in my heart and let them cloak the process as I create each piece.

create a sacred space to welcome creativity.

    Giving Myself a Break

If I find I’m tired, or am struggling, I’ve learned to put the work away for another day. If I want to skip a step because (again I’m tired), I stop and put it away. The wisdom of these women have reinforced the idea that creating a piece with every step being the most important has led me to care even more about the beauty I bring into the world.

    Everything Matters

The backs of my work matter to me as much as the front (like my mom said). The details are added with love. I feel like it is a gift from me to the person wearing a piece – from my heart to theirs.

I hope that the wisdom of these women can resonate with you like it did with me.

    WEAR THE GOOD JEWELRY

    WEAR THE GOOD JEWELRY

Are we supposed to save the good stuff?

When I was young, I noticed that my mom would buy things for herself but not use them. She would save them so she could have something nice for some future point in time. At the time, I thought it was odd because when I got new things, I wore them as soon as I got home!

The saddest summary of a life contains three descriptions: could have, might have, and should have.

    ~Louis E. Boone

    Bad Patterns Carried Forward

Fast forward to adulthood where I discovered I needed to pursue a creative passion. I started watercoloring. I got my supplies and bought me some “good” paper. For those of you who are curious, the Arches brand is known for being “good” and what great watercolorists use (or so I was told).

I didn’t think I was skilled enough to use the “good” paper. I worked at my skill and created on anything but the good paper. Fast forward some more where I decided to pursue my ultimate passion of enameling. I set my brushes aside and pursued this passion with a fervor. Meanwhile, the “good” paper sat untouched in it’s cellophane package. I kept it for many more years thinking that one day, I’d be inspired and skilled enough to paint the masterpiece that the good paper deserved.

Don't Wait another day, get it out of the vault
    Where it wherever you are

    And I Waited Too Long

Well, guess what, I just recently donated the good paper to a local high school art department. I never even opened the paper. I never even dare try. It was at that moment that I realized that keeping things in such a sacred position meant that I would never be good enough to utilize them. It was a ridiculous way of thinking.

Everything is Sacred and Nothing is Sacred

I now treat all of the materials I use as sacred yet I also treat my muse as sacred and if she wants to use the “good” materials, we use them. If we ruin a creation (which we have), we chalk it up to a learning experience. But I no longer hold anything so sacred that my life will pass me by while it is still in the cellophane wrapper.

    Finally Free

Finally, I feel the same way about wearing the “good” jewelry. In all honesty, I rarely (if ever) go to events that warrant wearing “good” jewelry. But, at the same time, I love good jewelry. )For me, good jewelry is artful and well made with quality materials.)

I wear the “good” jewelry to Pilates, grocery shopping, hiking, snowshoeing, and just laying around reading a book. I wear it with shorts and tank tops as well as dresses and slacks. I wear it to coffee shops and fancy eating establishments. I don’t wait. I don’t save it for that perfect moment. Follow the below links to purchase

    Are You Free?

Have you ever done something like this? I’d love to hear about it. I also encourage you to wear the good jewelry!!! Life is too short to let it sit in a drawer.
